POKOTABI / PLACES WORTH A DETOUR
食堂とワイン松吉
Located in Kyoto's Kitano-Kobaicho area, Cafe & Kitchen Matsukichi serves comforting Western-style yoshoku fare—from succulent hamburger steaks and crisp fried prawns to tender beef cutlets—alongside desserts made in-house and finished to order in a relaxed dining room.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Generously sauced with tartar, a large fried prawn arrives golden and crisp alongside a plump hamburger steak that seals in every bit of savory meat juice. The yoshoku dishes brought to the tables at Cafe & Kitchen Matsukichi showcase meticulous preparation and generous portions, offering genuine satisfaction from the very first bite. Another popular choice is the beef cutlet, featuring tender domestic beef cloaked in a delicate batter and accompanied by a rich house-made demi-glace sauce that lets the meat's texture shine.
The cafe also appeals for everyday dining with hearty teishoku set menus, such as chicken nanban soaked in sweet-and-sour vinegar or oven-baked salmon seasoned with shio-koji. Diners can also explore an à la carte selection, ranging from prawn ajillo to handmade pizzas like the classic Margherita—crafted entirely from scratch, down to the dough and tomato sauce—making it just as inviting to unwind over a glass of wine or beer in the evening.
After savoring the savory courses, the dessert menu merits equal attention. Sweets are prepared in-house, from crème brûlée torched crisp to order to rich classic chocolate cake and baked cheesecake, offering a soothing, leisurely finish alongside a cup of coffee.
Fitted with both counter seating and tables, the dining space works equally well for an unhurried solo meal or a lunch or dinner shared with family and friends, with advance table bookings accepted. For anyone visiting the Kitano-Hakubaicho area, it provides an approachable setting for authentic yoshoku and relaxing moments.
